Social phobia and swimming in the indoor pool: why the swimming channel in Horgen is the safest place for your training.

Social anxiety disorder is far more than just a fleeting feeling of insecurity. It is a serious mental illness characterized by a profound fear of negative evaluation in social situations. The result is crippling avoidance behavior. People stop going shopping, avoid parties and ultimately often give up the sports they actually love. The public swimming pool in particular acts like a burning glass for anxiety.

The swimming pool as a place of maximum exposure – is over!

  1. Physical exposure: you only wear swimwear. The feeling that every flaw and every movement is being judged by strangers is omnipresent.
  2. Unpredictability: you never know who is swimming in the lane, who is approaching you or who is standing at the edge of the pool. The loss of control is total.
  3. Pressure to perform: The fear of swimming “wrong”, being in the way of others or standing out negatively due to your own technique leads to an inner tension that makes sport impossible.

The swimming channel: A bridge back to activity

When I bought the swimming channel in 2016, I never thought about offering support to people with this disability. Because the swimming channel stands alone in the room, so to speak. Only people who are allowed to enter the room! It eliminates all the anxiety-inducing factors of a public pool and replaces them with a controlled, discreet environment. In the context of a social phobia, the channel functions as a “safe space”.

1. discretion begins at the door. Social anxiety often starts on the way. There are no public parking garages or overcrowded lobbies in our setup. Our own parking lot right at the entrance allows you to arrive discreetly. You don’t have to greet anyone, explain yourself at the cash desk or meet strangers in the checkroom.

2. absolute privacy instead of an arena feeling. There are no spectators in the swimming channel. Your own shower cubicle and the shielded training room ensure that you can concentrate 100% on yourself. It is your “own swimming pool” for this time. The knowledge that no unforeseen people will turn up immediately lowers your cortisol levels (stress hormone) and allows you to really train.

3. control by the current. Predictability is a major advantage in the case of mental stress. The continuous, individually adjustable current provides a stable framework. You swim against the water, not against other people. You don’t have to worry about touching anyone or being overtaken. The current sets the rhythm for you – an almost meditative state that helps to stop the circling thoughts of fear (rumination).

4. 1-to-1 coaching as a safe interaction. Instead of an anonymous crowd, you only meet your coach. In this protected environment, we work without judgment. It’s not about being “perfect”, but about regaining confidence in your own body in the water. The video analysis in the channel is a factual tool that helps you to separate reality (your movement) from your fear. (your negative self-assessment). Swimming/training can also be done 100% on your own.

Conclusion: Breaking the social distancing

Exercise is an essential component in overcoming anxiety disorders. But if you don’t dare leave the house, you can’t exercise. The swimming channel closes this gap. It offers the professionalism of a top sports center combined with the intimacy of your own living room.

Here you can realize your potential without the fear of being judged. It’s the place where you can regain the joy of movement – completely with yourself, without any pressure.
